Lanaya Leaves One Memory

The former Duke of Uhatu tells Kerrick that Lanaya took his knowledge and left him one story to repeat.

Lanaya offers an intended victim enough life to tell everyone what he lost.

The story

The tells that took his knowledge and left him one story to repeat. A flustered healer hurries Kerrick into an ornate hospice room, where the duke lies propped on thistledown pillows, eyes sharp, begging to tell it. His appetite for arcana led him to a master codex said to open the hidden door to all knowledge, and word of the quest drew the wrong kind of attention.

Midway through an incantation, Lanaya’s psionic blade thrummed against his temple. Her masters had ordered his death; for the knowledge he had gained, she offered a compromise. Enough of his mind would be erased to count him dead, and he would wake once a day to share his story as an example.

Her blade slid in, and the rest of his learning slid out to her. The duke’s eyes lose focus. He slumps back, breathing but otherwise still.

Kerrick hears the bargain from the duke and watches his waking end; the duke’s own name and what Uhatu is go unsaid.
