's syndicates, gangs, and secret societies had not pulled the city into chaos because Momma Eeb held its underworld together. She was murdered 'last week', whenever that was, and her death left a power vacuum. Four figures stepped forward to claim her place as the voice of White Spire: , , , and .

Hobgen alone is explicitly identified as Eeb's former lieutenant; Jull explicitly says he wants to restore order. No killer is named, and no winner: the succession is not settled.

She had a lot of friends, her daughter says, Kunkka among them, and Wren is gathering them to get answers. She also lent money against collateral, at least to Meepo.
