Tiny came to life as a small piece of stone, but what he was before remains unknown even to him. He crosses the world looking for an origin, a parent, or a people among many possible kinds of living stone. The same forces that erode ordinary rock instead add to his mass, so the search continually makes him larger.

- Who were the artisans? tells Tiny that the artisans knew not what they created in him. Tiny's own telling has a stone that came to life and no maker; the Titan's word gives him makers and no names, and does not make the Titan one of them.
