Quibbins Finds Cedric’s Empty Room
follows a journal’s missing page to ’s laboratory and finds the alchemist gone. The book comes from the son of an alchemist who went mad. Its obscure account of dark magic promises immortality but breaks off before the last page.
Quibbins seeks someone who can explain it. Cedric’s attic stands open to the stars, with scattered books, bottles and red circles surrounded by candle stumps. The empty room ends the search without easing the scribe’s fear that another seeker will follow.
Quibbins finds an empty laboratory; Enigma’s encounter with Cedric supplies a separate account of his departure.
